For forty years, the Turkish artist Nil Yalter has been producing work solidly anchored in political reality, concentrating namely on the migratory phenomena between the Middle East and Europe, the dramatic state of which is well known. Born in Cairo in 1938, a professor at the Sorbonne from 1980 to 1995, she is known for her politically relevant work, be it video, painting, drawing or multimedia installation. The Arter art centre in Istanbul has recently dedicated an entire retrospective exhibition to her, providing an overview of her hybrid installations to the greater public (October 14, 2016 – January 15, 2017). Nil Yalter will also be the subject of an upcoming feature in Switch (on Paper).
