Edelweis

During the Second World War, the Edelweiss (worn on the cap and sleeve) was the insignia of the 1st Mountain Division of the Wehrmacht, an elite troop which 11 years after the end of the war was integrated into the Bundeswehr (National Army of the Federal Republic of Germany founded in 1955) under former commanders. It contributed to the war crimes committed by the Nazi regime, in particular during the massacre of Italian troops in Cefalonia in 1943 (mass execution by the German army of the men of the 33rd Italian infantry division “Acqui”).
